About the Journal

The scientific publication the Journal of Sound, Silence, Image and Technology (JoSSIT) grew out of the research group of the same name (SSIT), which is linked to the TecnoCampus university centers, affiliated with the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The journal seeks to bring together academic debate and scientific research on the relation of sound as a broad concept with an audiovisual context.

The relation between sound and image is at the heart of the publication. As such, JoSSIT is concerned with sound, music and silence; their ontological properties and characteristics in relation to a communicative phenomenon and their technical, narrative, communicative and social interweaving in audiovisual products.

JoSSIT accepts papers with a pluri-disciplinary approach and with a wide range of focuses as found in the fields of musicology, sociology, psychology, communication, aesthetics and others, provided the basis of the research is the relation of sound or sound tracks used with images or an audiovisual message.

JoSSIT is an online and open-access electronic scientific journal with a particular interest in:

  • The narrative of sound, silence and music in audiovisual products
  • The practical application of technology associated with sound, silence and music
  • The evolution of how we listen to and interpret sound, silence and music
  • Characteristics of the consumption and reception of sound and music in the 21st century
  • Theories on sound, silence and music and their interrelation with images
  • Music, sound, silence and persuasion
  • Music, sound, silence and the internet

JoSSIT publishes one online issue per year, excluding any special issues. Articles are always published in English, with the option to also publish in Spanish or Catalan if this was the language of the original submission.

JoSSIT seeks to support and encourage the free exchange of scientific information and so access to its articles is unrestricted, instant and free of charge. Readers have the option to order a printed copy for a fee, which contributes towards production costs.

Articles submitted to JoSSIT are selected through a blind peer review to ensure quality and clarity of content. During this process, academic experts in the area relevant to the article in question will review the content of the manuscript. The author’s identity will remain anonymous during this process, and authors will also be unaware of the identity of the reviewer assigned to their article.

This reflects the fact that JoSSIT’s priority is knowledge creation and subsequent scientific discussion following publication. JoSSIT has no desire to censor new content by preventing it appearing in the public realm. JoSSIT believes it is up to the authors themselves and the scientists following their work to evaluate whether it is of sufficient quality and interest for their own particular research and so we do nothing to impede this.

The journal does not charge a fee for submissions, their editing or publication.

Anti-plaginarism policy

The journal JoSSIT is committed to the copyright of the scientific community and is committed to quality in the originality of the contributions, although based on duly cited previous contributions. For this reason, JoSSIT applies a systematic review of the articles proposed through the Turnitin application. This anti-plagiarism policy guarantees that all published works are unpublished and original and contributes to increasing the quality of articles and of publication in general. The authors and reviewers also have many other free access anti-plagiarism tools such as CopioNic, Plagscan or Plagium among others.
